Managing Cultures
"The Intercultural abilities of managers on overseas assignments are increasingly important to bottom-line performance of multinational businesses..."
(Stening & Hammer, 1992)

"Although most international personnel are considered technically competent, most do not possess effective cross-cultural skills"
(Gertsen 1990)

"...the two most common criteria used for selecting international managers have not changed during the last 30 years: technical expertise and previous overseas experience ..."
However, "... previous overseas experience is not at all associated with greater levels of professional effectiveness or greater intercultural interaction overseas"

(Kealey 1996)
International Personnel Selection

A considerable body of research has demonstrated that 'overseas effectiveness' refers to three main areas:  personal (including family) adjustment, professional competence and intercultural effectiveness.  We use a range of effective psychometric intercultural competence tools, including the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) in order to determine an individual's orientation toward cultural difference. Such tools are very useful aids to international personnel selection.
